Logan was diagnosed at 6 weeks old with Congenital Heart Disease, more specifically a condition known as Fallots Tetralogy, subaortic VSD with Pulmonary Stenosis, infundibular RVOTO and ASD . In simple terms he had 4 defects of the heart and he would need major heart surgery if he was to live into adulthood and his parents were told surgery would occur around 8-9 months of age.
This was truly devastating to his parents Mick & Stacey as Logan was their first baby the diagnosis came as a shock - they found themselves asking why. They began a long physical and mentally exhausting journey to fix his heart.
After three operation dates were rescheduled due to emergency admissions, bed space and investigations into abnormal pre op blood test results, Logan finally underwent major open heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital on 22nd April 2010 just 10 days before his 1st Birthday.
Although suffered a collapsed lung and infection post surgery he amazed everyone with his determination, strength and recovery being discharged only 6 days after surgery with just Paracetamol and Ibuprofen as pain relief! Logan still has checkups and may need further surgery in the future but for the moment nothing is holding him back he keeps going from strength to strength.
During his stay at Glenfield Logan and his parents met 8 month old Albert, the inspiration behind KEEPTHEBEAT.
Stacey and Mick, Logan’s parents have chosen to fundraise for KEEPTHEBEAT in tribute to Logan on the anniversary of his life saving operation and all the many other heart babies and their families that this charity aims to supports past, present and future.
Logan is one of the children in the Little Stars Room at the Old Station Nursery Lincoln Waterside in Lincoln. In conjunction with his parents they are holding a fundraising day on Thursday 21st April 2011 - one year on from Logan’s Open Heart Surgery.
The Nursery have various fun 'heart related' activities planned such as 'Hunt the Heart' in the nursery garden, asking children and staff to dress in red for the day, Pass the Heart in place of Pass the Parcel, an Anagram Quiz with 20 heart related words has been devised and is being sold prior to the day to raise funds, they are selling Keep The Beat cupcakes, decorating hearts and much more.
The fundraising day for Keep The Beat has the backing of The Old Station Nursery Managing Director who has encouraged the other Old Station Nursery’s in the region to take part and help raise awareness and make the day a huge success. We hope it inspires others to do the same.
